I remember sitting around with my friends before the semester started, and reading them the email Marlen sent us all.  They all laughed at me because they knew the course was going to be miserable.  Once the class met for the first couple times I only got more scared because I saw how tough it was going to be.  But I told myself I was going to do it and stayed up on all the work and made sure I did well.  I am an english major and this course has definitely helped me become a stronger writer.  My goals as a future researcher are to go to grad school and be freakin’ brilliant.  My proudest moment was most definitely when I finished my novella.  I got to see all my hard work pay off.  I think this whole course will stick with me long after this course.  I learned a ton and I’m going to use it all as an english  major so I don’t plan on forgetting it all.  This was that class that you hated the whole semester, but as soon as it’s over you are realize you’re so glad you went through the experience and you love it.

The entire process of creating this research paper was the most stressful thing I have ever done!  Every step of the way I had no idea what I was doing, but it made me learn a lot and quickly.  My most useful document was a book titled Straight Edge Youth, by Robert Wood.  It gave a comprehensive history of the entire movement and its social implications.  The most helpful feedback I got was from my friends.  I had them read what I wrote and had them tell me what they thought.  They gave me advice on a lot of dialogue too.  The most difficult part of the process for me was the time constraint.  I had to write the entire 45 page paper in about three weeks, so it was really stressful.  The easiest part was the methods.  I had a firm grasp on my methods so writing it in a one page paper wasn’t hard at all.  I think the novella shows my best writing as opposed to my research style paper.  I think I was able to use a stronger voice in my novella.

One of the things that I learned about my own writing from the peer review assignment was that I need to work on my citations.  I have plenty of resources so I don’t think finding a way to add some sources and citations into my writing.  I also had a few problems with formatting.  I guess I just let myself take it easy on the first drafts just because I knew I was going to be going back to polish it up later.  I learned that I have a lot of work ahead of me!  Thats what I learned about my project.

Based on the two articles that I read, the results section is devoted to explaining what happened during the research.  This is where the writer tells about his or her findings.  This is the section of the paper that may include graphs and charts and other visuals that help relate the information.  The article that Marlen assigned us said that one of the most common errors is to be repetitive and go over the same findings over and over.  That is my biggest concern about this part of the paper, however, I’m not really writing one because I’m writing the 40 page novella.

The discussion section relates what the research found to what is already available on the topic.  I think of it as a discussion between the researchers themselves.  What was different and what was similar to other available research is included.  In Marlen’s article, it suggests that a writer talk about how his findings either back up or disprove the original hypothesis.  This is also a place for authors to disagree or agree with what other researchers have found.  Basically, the discussions section is devoted to seeing how what you came up with relates to almost everything else that the writer did in the process.

Marlen’s article says, “your conclusion can provide a bridge to help your readers make the transition back to their daily lives.”  The function of the conclusion is to wrap up the entire paper.  The author needs to answer his or her research question and tie up loose ends in the process so that the reader can walk away from the paper and have a complete understanding of the topic, instead of walking away unsure about what they read.  It’s the author’s chance to give a few last words. Marlen’s article also said that the conclusion is a way to make the reader glad they ahve spent the time reading the paper. The author should wrap it up in a way that lets people walk away from the paper feeling complete.

I have catered my writing for my audience I think by defining all the things I need to define.  I bet a lot of my readers will not know what Straight Edge is so it is necessary to define things like that so that my readers will understand the rest of my paper.  I also used language that is familiar to younger readers, as my paper is geared more toward a youthful audience.  But once I combined my papers I noticed that I really need to work on my transitions from section to section.
